Some R&B records are so recognizable that you have to be careful when you start messing with them.

Ashanti’s “Only U” is one of those 2000s classics. For this remix, I wanted to take that familiar vocal and put it into a completely different club environment without losing what makes the original so good.

The remix sits somewhere between tech house, UK garage, and bass music, built around a 124 BPM four-to-the-floor groove with plenty of garage swing. Heavy, almost skippy drums drive the track while deep, heavily modulated basses bring in a darker edge with some serious dubstep influence.

I also wanted to have some fun with the vocal. Instead of simply dropping the original vocal over a new beat, I flipped it into a completely new intro before letting the first verse play out. From there, the vocal gets chopped up and rearranged into a more club-focused section while a new rolling bassline takes over.

The result is a pretty heavy take on a classic R&B record. It still has that unmistakable Ashanti vocal, but underneath it is a completely different beast with swinging drums, rolling low-end, and bass that moves all over the place.

This one is built for the dancefloor. The groove keeps it moving, the vocal keeps it familiar, and the bass does the rest.
